These Gibson Archtops, an L5CES and Super400 are one-of-a-kind custom shop creations that Jim Hutchins and team made in 1998. The Custom, Art and Historic Division selected the two most influential archtops ever made, the L-5 and the Super 400 and dressed them in a sumptuous combination of the finest blonde quilted maple, the most detailed black pearl inlay work ever produced, and distinctively engraved and accented every appointment. Not only blessed with phenomenal looks, these guitars play and sound like none other. The L5-CES is the exact instrument on the left of the advertisement. There were 2 Super 400's made. This Super 400 , not in the photo, but from the same woodstock as the 3 made at the time, has even finer quilted maple, and the most spectacular quilted maple fleur-de-lis inlaid bound pickguard. I think it is the finest Super 400 I’ve ever seen and played.
